Mrs
Shepherd lives here. She is over 90 and has lived in the area all
her life. Housebound now, she spends much of her time looking back.
She can remember when Bethlehem Street used to be called 'Bethlehem
Lane'. There were fields and farms, hedges and trees.
In the 1930s the first suburban houses appeared and then, after the
Second World War, came the flood of red brick which snuffed out the
last patches of green.
Looking back, she thinks of her childhood as heavenly days in an Eden
which, now, she alone can recall.
Why does the Advent Calendar start like this?
